Abstract

The death of Francisco Franco was not as expected, the immediate re-establishment of relations between Spain and Mexico. Against the odds, diplomatic pulse recovery took place at the end of March, 1977, precisely a year and a half after the death of dictator and the immediate Prince Juan Carlos as new King Spain proclamation. Before this peculiar historical juncture, this article reveals the complex problems that conditioned the rapprochement between the two countries and how the Mexican President José López-Portillo found a political formula, welcomed by Government Adolfo Suárez, alien to the democracy clause Mexico had imposed Spain as conditio sine qua non to normalize relations.
