The greek far right: from Golden Dawn to the Spartans (1980- 2023)

This article aims to present the constellation of the Greek far right in Greece, a unique case study due to the presence of an openly neo-Nazi party in its parliament of most of the 2010s. Golden Dawn stood out for its ideological extremism and use of violence as means for doing politics in the twenty-first century Europe. On 7 October 2020, the Greek Court of Appeals dictated
the leader and eighteen Golden Dawn MPs guilty for crimes related to homicide. Despite the disrepute caused by Golden Dawn’s trial, its legacy and ideology remain deeply rooted in Greek society. It was only a matter of time until new actors appeared to cover this demand. Indeed, in 2023 Greece surprised the world again with the entrance of three far-right parties in the Greek parliament, out of which we focus on the Spartans as a Golden Dawn branch.
