The rise and fall of the Portuguese Revolution (1974-1975)

Abstract

We discuss in this article how the Portuguese civil society could, during the revolutionary process, impose their ideology on political parties that were trying to consolidate themselves in the country’s political spectrum.
We understand that the ability to extend their ideas (through social mobilization and typical labour movement struggles), to political subjects was a victory of the citizens, that permitted the adoption of many of the called «conquests of the revolution», including the nationalizations. However, this triumph became paradoxically also its own defeat, since few years later the same parties began the opposite legislative journey.
