El origen de las cumbres del G7. Cooperación política ante una economía globalizada

Este artículo se centra en el origen de las cumbres del G7. La hipótesis que defiende es que la primera cumbre del G7 en Rambouillet fue una iniciativa planificada cuidadosamente de antemano por el canciller alemán Helmut Schmidt y el presidente francés Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. La unión de estos dos líderes al frente de dos importantes potencias europeas, su afinidad personal y su formación económica fueron los elementos clave para que se ideara y celebrara la primera reunión, que tenía un objetivo principal: tratar de buscar soluciones conjuntas a problemas económicos y monetarios que se escapaban del control de la política nacional y, aunque esto fracasara, al menos dar una imagen de unidad y dominio de la situación por parte de las potencias occidentales de cara a los inversores, los países productores de petróleo y la Unión Soviética.
