Navarrese and british workers’ resistance to industrial reform in the eighties: conflict and international solidarity

The restructuring of capitalism, from the crisis of the seventies onwards, led to a number of important economic, social, and political processes, including the triumph of neoliberalism, the transition to a postmodern model of the economy or the numerical decline of the industrial workforce and the loss of its social or political weight. These processes, which must have led to the disappearance of the working class, did not develop without conflict. It is possible find signs of worker resistance in the face of industrial reform processes in the 80s. It was a case of the struggles of the British miners’ strike in 1984 and early ‘80s fights by Potasas de Navarra workers to prevent the closure of the company. The purpose of this article is to establish the two cases in the same global context and to establish a relationship between them, studding the common elements they share, for example, the importance of international solidarity.
