Abstract

After years of alleged immunity to the populist radical right, Portugal has seen the political party Chega enter parliament. Since then, this political force has grown in votes and seats, currently occupying the position of the third national party. Aiming to assess Chega as a political and social phenomenon, this article intends to trace the party’s fundamental axes, namely its course since inception to present time, its leadership and political ideas. In order to do so, this article begins by analyzing the conditions favorable to the emergence of the populist radical right in the country, taking a brief look at the genealogy of right-wing Portuguese radicalism and then pointing out the changes that have occurred within the party system. Then, it examines Chega’s first steps and the profile of its founder and president, André Ventura. Finally, in order to assess the extent to which Chega fits into the space of the populist radical right, the article approaches the ideology and programmatic agenda of the party.
