DANA in Valencia (Spain), 2024: Origin and Socio-Economic Impacts

Resumen

This paper investigates the increasing occurrence of the DANA (Depresiones Aisladas en Niveles Altos) events in the Mediterranean, with particular focus on the DANA event that struck the Valencia region in October 2024. The study analyses the meteorological factors behind DANAs, such as rising Mediterranean Sea surface temperatures and disruptions to the mid-latitude jet stream, both of which influenced by global climate change. As consequence of these phenomena, 2024 Valencia DANA brought heavy rainfall, severe flooding, which resulted on significant social and economic impacts, and more than 220 fatalities. The aim of this study is to explore the origin and the consequences of the above-mentioned phenomena highlighting the vulnerability of the urban and rural areas to such extreme weather. Additionally, the effect of the event on the local and immigration communities have been discussed. The analysis stresses the need for effective climate adaptation measures and the socio-economic impacts on the communities
