Pros and Cons of Social Media

by Rosie George (2019-09-19)

Social media has grown from a simple platform for smooth communication, via the internet, into something that has penetrated the very fabrics of our society. Today, no mention of the internet can be complete without mentioning social media. In addition to communication, social media platforms today are marketing tools, gaming platforms, a news source for many and even the primary source of entertainment. To say, social media has witnessed explosive growth would be a colossal understatement.

To get an idea of how large social media has become, here’s the average monthly number of users on the most popular social media platforms:

  • Facebook: 2,230,000,000
  • YouTube: 1,900,000,000
  • Instagram: 1,000,000,000
  • Twitter: 330,000,000

With active users in billions, it’s no surprise that social networking sites are primarily what many people frequently search for on the internet. Such a large number of users also means that there are now online communities revolving around every imaginable topic, from cheap dissertation writing service to sports.

But as social media has grown in popularity, along with its advantages, there have been rising concerns regarding the harmful effects of social media. Recent studies and research has shown that social media can have widespread disadvantages on its users, especially the younger audience.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any benefits to social media. Quite the contrary, Social media has been directly as well an indirectly responsible for creating jobs and businesses. It has enabled people to thrive and grow rich. To get an idea of the potential of social media, take a look at the top 10 richest YouTubers. With millions of dollars in income, they earn much more than even some top CEOs. Social media has changed our world and the way it works. With the power of social media, people can go on to earn big money even without having a formal education.

It’s worth taking a look at both the pros and cons of social media to truly understand how it can be used effectively.

Pros
  • Connect with anyone in the world: As shown earlier, the most popular social media sites are hotbeds of billions of people. And what does it cost to be able to connect with anyone among those? Nothing! Yes, all major social media networks earn through advertising. What this means is that the signing up for them is free. Social media is a great way to not only connect with new people but also with loved ones or old high school friends. With localisation tools, one can also get to know people who live close or in the same region.
  • Easy and Instant Communication: In the old days, communication was a game of patience. Sending letters and waiting to receive them could take days. With the introduction of phones, the speed improved, but they came with their constraints. They could only be used at fix locations. With the advent of the internet, though, it all changed. The internet gave rise to social media, and social media paved the way for instant and straightforward, easy communication. It’s as simple as merely picking up the smartphone and going to any social network.
  • Quick News and Information Discovery: One of the ways social media has evolved significantly is turning into a source of getting news for many people. Social media today is not only the primary source of keeping updated with world affairs for many people but also the primary source of entertainment. This can probably be attributed to the ease with which engaging forms of media like images and videos can be uploaded and shared on social media.
We live in an era where everything is expected to be quick. So imagine waiting for the news to arrive at a fixed time, how out of place does that sound?
  • Great Marketing Medium: With its vast audience, social networks are the perfect medium of marketing for businesses, especially small ones. Due to the low or non-existent cost of entry, small businesses can easily set up their virtual profiles. But it goes beyond that. The marketing potential of social media is not lost upon themselves. That’s why all social media companies consistently incorporate marketing specific features in their platforms. These cost much less than traditional marketing tactics, correctly aligning with small business’ budgets and strategies. Social media is such an excellent place for businesses that many businesses today operate entirely on social media, without any physical presence whatsoever.
  • Entertainment: At its core, social media is a fun place to be. One can watch videos, browse images, communicate with people of similar interests, take polls and play games etc. It comes as no surprise then that so many people can be seen casually scrolling through Facebook while waiting for lobbies and subways etc.
  • Information Overload: Back in the old days, sources of information were limited to just a handful of mediums, like newspapers, books, other people and Television. On social media, though, there are billions of people posting links, videos, images, and whatnot. This can easily lead to information overload and make for an unpleasant experience.
  • Privacy: Privacy in recent times has become a significant worry around the world. This fact is only further exacerbated by the fact that many of the major social media players have been found guilty of violating users’ private data. Social media has made it possible to find out a lot about some other person. It’s not too uncommon to come across stories of how someone was fired because of something they posted on social media.
ConsSocial Pressure: On the internet, a person is in control of what impression he gives off. As per natural human psychology, everyone shares their happy moments on social media, probably as a result of the stigma that’s attached around sadness. But while on the surface, it may seem like a good thing that happy memories are shared on social media, it has an adverse effect. Real-life is not all happy moments. So when social media users going through a tough time see everyone else enjoying life, it can result in drawing comparisons and falling into an inferiority complex.
