The medical research regarding this question continues to pour in. As it does, more and more benefits are beginning to surface which really tells us why omega-3 acids are so good for us. One of the largest benefits comes in the area of blood pressure. According to numerous studies, omega-3s can lower blood pressure. Fish oil can also cut triglyceride levels by 20% to 50%. Additional research shows us that cardiovascular health is also greatly improved. Omega-3 fatty acids appear to lower the overall risk of death from heart disease. Arrhythmias may be reduced by fish oil and people who take omega-3 after suffering from a heart attack cut their risk of having another heart attack significantly. The risk of stroke can also be reduced by eating fish once or twice a week. Numerous studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce stiffness and joint pain. In addition, they also seem to boost the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs. Research has found that cultures that eat food with high levels of omega-3s have lower levels of depression in their society. Doctors have also found that the effect of anti-depressants is boosted by fish oil consumption. Other studies have shown that fish oil can help with osteoporosis by improving bone density. There is also some evidence that omega 3 fatty acids might improve lung function and reduce the need for medication. Although preliminary, there is some additional evidence that omega-3s also helps to control Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
