Nordic Walking is known to be a total body workout. Your back, chest, shoulder, and leg muscles are all working with one exercise. This results in burning 20% to 50% more calories than normal walking. It also increases your strength and endurance and can lead to a longer stride length and faster walking speed. One of the nicest benefits to Nordic Walking, I think, is the choices you have to exercise. You can go alone or with as many people you would like. You can do this anywhere you are allowed to walk and take in all that nature has to offer. You can go at your own pace at anytime. One important fact to remember is to get poles that are the right length for you. Walking poles are a lot shorter than cross country ski poles because there is no glide in walking. Which makes your stride length much shorter. Using poles that are the wrong length may work against you. They can actually add stress to your back, hips, knees, and ankles. Walking poles are totally different from ski poles or trekking poles. Walking poles come with removable rubber tips for hard surfaces and metal tips for beaches, snow, and ice. Some are just solid one piece, and some are telescoping twist lock styles. They are made with either a strapless grip, or a loop strap, or a glove type strap.
